Qt pie lunch...

Hearts make such a cute lunch, don't they? Luckily, my little guy loves hearts, and he doesn't mind them in his lunch. February is the month where hearts are everywhere, aren't they? Hearts in February are usually associated with Valentine's Day, but I love hearts in Februay for another reason. February is the month that the American Heart Association has set aside as healthy heart month. And, heart health is very important to me. I love to make heart themed lunches in February to support this worthy cause. So, I like to do several heart lunches throughout the month.

We have this candy store here in the M-town that is A-MA-ZING. Dinstuhls's makes all homemade candies that are devine. In February, they feature milk chocolate covered strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries, and I love, love, love the strawberries! The hubs always picks up a couple of boxes of each for me us. Dinstuhl's also had these milk chocolate hearts with strawberry cream center, and he picked some of these up for the boys. They were pretty yummy, too. It's a good thing these candies are only available around Valentine's day....my waistline would be in trouble!

Applegate & Yumbox....Win-Win!

Last week, I reviewed the Applegate HALF TIME lunch kit. The lovely people over at Applegate sent me 3 different types of the kit for us to try out and review, and I chose the bologna kit for Z's first lunch since bologna is his favorite deli meat. Today's lunch features the HALF TIME turkey kit packed in the Yumbox. This was a Win-Win all around as Z loved the turkey kit, too, and he loves the Yumbox. You can see my Applegate HALF TIME lunch kit review HERE.

Applegate HALF TIME Lunch Kit Review

Here at The Lucky Lunchbox, I have a goal to provide nutritious and healthy lunches for my son that are packed with a little creative flair. I make his lunches with a variety of fruit (which he eats heartily) and veggies (which he eats not so heartily), and I prefer organic products, although that's not always possible for my budget. I try to make his lunches nutritionally balanced. I miss the mark with this quite often, I admit, but when it comes to deli meats, hotdogs, and such, I always choose products that are of a healthier variety.....meaning they are nitrate free, preservative free, with no hormones or artificial ingredients.

So often, I think, as parents, we are in such a hurry to come up with lunches for our children that we forego nutrition for convenience. I am definitely guilty of this. But, as a busy parent, I love convenience foods. So, I was very excited to see that Applegate has just launched the first nationally available pre-packed lunch kit, HALF TIME, that features natural and organic ingredients. Let's all say it together....YAY FOR CONVENIENCE!! And, I was even more excited to have the opportunity to review the HALF TIME kit. Look for a fun Applegate HALF TIME kit giveaway soon.

What is HALF TIME?
HALF TIME is similar in concept to the Lunchables product line. You know.....that meat, cheese, cracker product loaded with nitrates, fillers, and artificial stuff that is packaged in a box. Kids clamor for these, don't they? Well, Applegate HALF TIME combines three of the leading brands in the natural and organic circle...Applegate, Stonyfield, and Annie’s...into one convenient kit. I really like this idea. While I choose to pack my son's lunch every day so that I have control over the quality of the ingredients, there are times that I’d just like to grab a box out of the refrigerator, toss it in his lunch box, and send him on his way. We love Applegate and Annie's products! And I use both of these brands in Z's lunches all the time. Stonyfield is new to us, but, as I expected, very well received by the little guy.

HALF TIME is designed with kids in mind. There are jokes and games for kids to play on the inside and outside of the box. All of the little plastic packages peel open easily so you do not need scissors or a knife to open them. This is great for older kids that get their lunch ready on their own. Also, the box opens in such a way that it can serve as a makeshift plate.

The Applegate HALF TIME kit comes in three varieties: Turkey & Cheese, Ham & Cheese, and Bologna & Cheese (see above). All three kits include: Applegate Naturals meats, which have no artificial ingredients or preservatives and are antibiotic free; Applegate American cheese made with no added hormones; Stonyfield YoKids Squeezers Strawberry Organic Lowfat Yogurt, and Annie’s Homegrown Buttery Rich Crackers. Each kit also includes either Annie’s Bunny Graham Friends or Annie's Organic Berry Patch Fruit Snacks.
Bologna is Z's favorite deli meat, so I chose the bologna kit to try first. The HALF TIME kit contained 5 slices of bologna, 5 slices of American cheese, 5 buttery crackers, a pack of fruit snacks, and a strawberry YoKids yogurt tube each in its own individual package. Yes, there is a lot of packaging with these kits. Here are all of the contents of the kit laid out (below) and ready for me to assemble Z's lunch.

Here is the lunch that I made for Z. I included the additional carrots (with ranch dip in the small box), apples, blueberries, and olives to round out his lunch as Z has a very hearty appetite at lunchtime, and the HALF TIME kit was not quite enough food for him. I only gave him half of the Annie's fruit snacks as I limit the amount of sweet treat in his lunch. This kit could easily be tossed into a lunch box unopened though...add an apple and a veggie juice drink with it and you have a nice well-rounded lunch. Z gobbled this lunch up!!! There was one cracker and half a piece of the cheese left. While he ate all of the Stonyfield yogurt Squeezers and said it tasted good, Z told me that he thought it was a bit runny (he is used to Yoplait yogurts that are a much thicker consistency).

FINAL VERDICT....
We really like the Applegate HALF TIME kit. As a parent, I appreciate that I don’t have to compromise between convenience and quality because this kit combines trusted brands that are that are already in my refrigerator and pantry. While I would not send this lunch kit with my son to school every day, I think it's a great option for a field trip day, a day at the zoo, or a day when Mama isn't feeling the lunch packing thing. I think we've all been there.

Here is an overview of the things we like about the Applegate HALF TIME kit and some of the points to keep in mind before purchasing:

Things we like:
  • The HALF TIME kit contains foods that are organic, and are hormone, nitrate, and preservative free.
  • The HALF TIME kit has no artificial colors or flavors.
  • The HALF TIME kit is fun to eat.
  • The HALF TIME box and individual packages are easily opened.
  • The HALF TIME kit is healthy and delicious.
  • The HALF TIME kit is a convenient and healthy lunch option for parents.

Things to consider before purchasing:
  • Price- The HALF TIME kit has a suggested retail price of $4.99....quite pricey for those more budget minded. I found them at my local Target for $4.39. There are many Applegate coupons available on the web, so these would make the kit more affordable.
  • Packaging waste- The HALF TIME kit has a lot of packaging waste.....the box, the individual plastic wrappers, the yogurt tube. I pack my son's lunches in reusable containers so as to eliminate packaging waste, so this was a consideration for me. I did, however, recycle the HALF TIME box and all the wrappers.
  • Portions- The HALF TIME kit may not be enough food on its own for older kids or kids with larger appetites. More food may need to be included for lunch. I had to include veggies and fruit to round out Z's lunch.

Thank you to Applegate for providing me free samples of the products mentioned in this post. All opinions expressed are my own and not influenced by any form of compensation.

End of school...You're a Star lunch...

Well, the little guy has 3 days of school left. I can't believe how quickly this school year has passed. It seems like just yesterday we were buying all the new clothes and school supplies, anxiously awaiting that first day. And, now, here we are with 3 days left, and we have all lost our focus at this point. This is going to be a crazy busy week with school wrapping up, and everyday this week, the kids are having some type of fun event at school. Z has had a really good year in 1st grade, so I thought a star themed lunch seemed appropriate for my little star. I'm hoping to have time to make one more lunch before school lets out....a goodbye 1st grade lunch.

Three little pigs lunch...

I love using cute cutters to make a lunch special. And I especially love the CuteZCute line of food cutters and stamps. The CuteZCute animal friends deco cutter kit is definitely one of my favorite fun food tools to use. With this kit, you can cut a boring sandwich into the shapes of a panda, frog, cat, or a pig. They are all absolutely adorable, and this cutter is very easy to use (which is key for me as I don't like to create lunches that are difficult or labor intensive.) There are other great uses for these cutters, too. In this lunch, I have cut the bologna with the pig shaped cutter. It can also be used to cut cheese, tortilla shells, cookie dough, pizza dough....the possibilities are endless. The CuteZCute deco cutter kit is a really fun lunch making accessory. You can see another lunch that I made using the CuteZCute kit HERE.

Bologna Heart and Arrow lunch...

Hi Friends! It's hump day! Yay!! I hope you all are having a good week. I've got a lot going on this week, so today's post is short, sweet, and to the point.  Get it?...arrow -- to the point. Ok, I'm no comedienne. Anyway, I really like how this lunch turned out. These long heart picks are so cute and have so many uses. You can see another lunch that I made with them HERE. I like how the arrow through the bologna heart adds a bit of cuteness to Z's otherwise boring sandwich. Little things really can add a big punch to the cute factor of a lunch.

*green beans with ranch dressing in the heart box- I found these little heart shaped boxes at my local Dollar Tree.

FUN sandwich-free lunch ideas

Do your kids like sandwiches? Sandwiches are neat, portable, and nearly a no-brainer, aren't they? My little guy likes sandwiches, and he would eat them every day if that's what I packed for his lunch. Z is a good eater, and will eat just about anything that I put in his lunch. So I admit, it's easy for me to fall into the 'sandwich, pretzels, fruit, done!!' rut. When Z started first grade last year, I decided to change up his lunch a couple times a week to break the monotony of a sandwich lunch every single day (um, yeah, I know, this is probably more for me than for Z).

Many of you, however, have kids that don't like sandwiches, or that tire of them quickly in the lunch box. So, today, I've pulled together 12 of Z's favorite non-sandwich lunches that I've made. Yes, we're liberating ourselves from bread and breaking free from the monotony and boredom of the sandwich lunch.

Below this collage, you will find the links to each sandwich-free lunch numbered 1-12. Click on the link to find out more about each individual lunch.

1.     Egg Muffins-  The recipe for egg muffins can be found under my "Recipes" tab above. These are great in a lunchbox because they are still very tasty at room temp.
2.     PB&J Rollups-  Tortilla roll ups are a great lunch idea. You can fill them with PB&J, meat and cheese, veggies, chicken or tuna salads, or whatever fillings you like best.
3.     Quesadillas-   Quesadillas are good in the lunchbox if your kids don't mind them room temp.
4.     Leftover pasta-  I like to send a Thermos in Z's lunchbox for items that need to be served warm. The possibilities are endless with a Thermos.....leftover spaghetti, lasagna, macaroni & cheese, soups, stews, dinner leftovers all work great in a Thermos. Z even likes to have oatmeal in his Thermos for lunch.
5.     Hotdogs-  OK...what kid doesn't like hot dogs! I buy either Natural Selects or Applegate brand nitrate and preservative free hotdogs and lunch meats so I don't feel so bad about sending these in Z's lunch often.
6.     Pasta dippers-  This was an idea passed on to me from another lunch blogger...sending pasta and sauce separate in order to allow for dipping. Z loved this in his lunch.
7.     Pizza Rolls-   Z loves the store bought pizza rolls, so on occasion, I will send them for his lunch. He likes them fine at room temp.
8.     Potstickers-  Potstickers are a new item that I've recently sent in Z's lunch. I can't say that he was overly thrilled with them. But, if your kids like potstickers, they are great in the lunchbox with a side of dipping sauce.
9.     Pancakes-  Pancakes are always a hit with Z in his lunchbox. Served with a container of real maple syrup, they are always a winner.
10.   Pizza stuffed biscuits-  I bought these little biscuits stuffed with pizza sauce, pepperoni, and mozzarella cheese at the grocery store. These would be easy to recreate using a can of crescent rolls.
11.   Tuna salad-  Chicken, ham, tuna, and egg salads are all great in the lunchbox.
12.   Corn dogs-   Z loves the mini corn dogs. These are the Morningstar Farms brand veggie corn dogs.

Here are some other great sandwich-free lunch ideas:

**Diced rotisserie chicken or turkey, lunch meat roll ups
**Quiche
**Rice or Pasta salad
**Meatballs
**Chicken nuggets-  My kids don't mind them at room temp.
**Savory muffins-  There are all kinds of yummy recipes on Pinterest for pizza muffins, ham and cheese muffins, and chicken pot pie muffins. I have not made any of these, but they sound delish!
**Boiled eggs-  Z is not a fan of boiled eggs, but they are great in a lunch, especially if you mold them into super cute shapes with an egg mold.
**Oatmeal-  Oatmeal is great in a Thermos.
**Milk and cereal- Yes, you can send cereal with milk for lunch if the milk is sent in a Thermos to keep it cold. Send the dry cereal in a container that will allow for the milk to be poured in.
**Slice of pizza
**Macaroni and cheese-  Who doesn't love mac & cheese for lunch?? It's great if sent in a Thermos.
**Tacos-  Z is not a huge taco eater (what!! A kid that doesn't like tacos?). He will on occasion eat a chicken taco if I send the meat, cheese, and other fixings separate and he gets to "build" his own.

Here are 5 great lunch packing tips to keep in mind.
  • Pick the right container. I typically use the Easy Lunch Boxes which are divided into three sections or the Munchkin Mealtime Bento box which also has three different compartments with lids. Fun and unique Bento boxes would be great, too.
  • Be sure your lunch boxes are BPA-free and are microwavable and freezable (if you think you’ll be reheating or freezing the food).
  • Maximize your leftovers. Leftovers are a beautiful thing! Dinnertime leftovers are great in the lunchbox because they make lunch packing quick and easy. I often plan my family's meals so that I can have leftovers for lunches. A Thermos is a great investment to add to your lunch making arsenal.
  • Mix up the lunchbox. So what if certain foods don't "go” with each other. Kids don’t care! PB&J with pasta salad? Why not?
  • Go for convenience. You don't have to pack a gourmet lunch to have a healthy and nutritional lunch. Many convenience food items now are very healthy and are great choices for kids. My kids love the on-the-go fruit and veggie pouches and portable fruit snack cups. They’re high fructose corn syrup-free and taste great. My kids also love the packages of freeze dried fruit. They're 100% fruit and are preservative and additive free.

I'd love to know what your favorite sandwich-free lunch foods are. I'm always looking for new food ideas for the lunchbox.

Tiny toes, Button nose lunch...

Babies, babies everywhere!!!! I have several friends that have recently had babies, and I now have 4 more friends that just announced they are expecting. Wowzers!!! I'm so happy for all these little bundles of joy. To celebrate all these wonderful and precious little people, today's lunch is all about babydom... onesies, baby ducks, and rattles. I fondly remember my own kidlets as babies... the late nights, diaper changes, nursing, first funny little smile. And I loved every bit of this! So, CONGRATS to all my friends! What a wonderful and exciting roller coaster you are all riding!

Fast cars and ROYGBIV...

Happy Friday, Friends!! Boy, what a busy week this has been. My oldest son is in the advanced chorus at school, and it's that time of the year for them to participate in every singing competition out there. So, this week has been filled with after school practices, uniform fittings, and the like. There's been little time for blog posts....oh well! That's the life of a mom and I love it. I'm sure many of you out there know exactly what I'm talking about.

So, I'm going to combine 2 lunches in this post.

First up....a car and street sign themed lunch. I love these stamped car shaped sandwiches. So cute!!!

Lunch #2 has a rainbow theme. How many of you remember the acronym used to remember the colors in the rainbow? Yep....ROYGBIV....so strange that I have never forgotten that. So, this is a ROYGBIV lunch minus the I for indigo....not enough room in the box for Indigo, plus I didn't really have an indigo colored food handy. Sorry indigo! I added an extra bit of fun with coordinating color crayon shaped food picks.
